Adoption process & fees

Every shelter or rescue group has its own process, but the steps are usually similar. Knowing what to expect helps you arrive prepared and avoids misunderstandings.
The usual steps
- Application: in My Pet App you fill out your pre-adoption application once and then request the pet you are interested in. The shelter receives your details together with the request.
- Contact and interview: the shelter messages or calls you to get to know you, answer questions and tell you more about the animal's personality and health.
- Visit or meet-up: many shelters ask you to meet the animal in person and sometimes to visit your home or see photos of the space.
- Adoption agreement: you usually sign a responsible ownership agreement, which may cover spaying or neutering, vaccines and follow-up.
- Follow-up: shelters often check in on how the new pet is settling in during the first weeks.
Is there a fee?
Some shelters ask for an adoption fee or donation and others do not. When there is one, it usually helps cover part of the care the animal has already received (such as vaccines, deworming, a microchip or spaying/neutering) and supports the animals still waiting for a home. Always ask what it includes and whether you will get records of that care.
Tips
- Answer honestly: the shelter is looking for the best match for the animal and for you.
- Ask for the vaccination card or records and any pending vet instructions.
- If you are not chosen this time, don't take it personally; another pet may be the right fit for your home.
